I'm happy to say, from here in my engineers seat, it was just a DRY gulch and NOT a box canyon we hit a day or so ago. Wheeeew...thought I had lost my job there for a bit. As Katie pointed out, in her comment...gotta remember that these old steam engines have to stop at the water tanks for a refill, and occasionally to add more coal to the bin. Gotta keep that stoker workin'. Lineman tells me the brakes are fine, and we can make it over any mountains we might encounter. A nice email yesterday, from Terry, who blogs at http://quilt-nut.blogspot.com/. The following 2 orphan quilts are projects she helped with.
The situation is a bit different from some of our orphan block quilts. This project is more like what Carol E.'s (http://giraffedreams.blogspot.com/)orphan quilts. They are made from the blocks of MANY...not just one.
I'll add Terry's explaination:(ok..seems it disappeared from my late night pasting..) I'll go get it! Got it: "Here are some orphan block quilts that a friend and I made. They were made for our guild retreat. The orphan blocks were collected from members over the year and separated and organized by likeness. Then they were given out at one of our meetings to whoever wanted to put one together. The blocks we were given were the cube center block, the cubes at the bottom, the four corner blocks, and a couple of other smaller blocks. We added the rest. At our retreat you could vote for your favorites and then they were given away by drawing names of those that participated. It was the first orphan block quilt we had ever made. It was done in 2005. We loved it and loved working on it but it sure was hard to give it up. We did not win (we were sad) but it didn't stop us from doing another one.
These last couple pictures are sections of the second orphan quilt pictured above. Thanks for the email Terry, and thanks for sharing these two great quilts with us! If you have orphan blocks or a top made from the 'leftovers', or if you are a 'lurker' who loves the "maverickness" of quilts made in this fashion, please feel welcome to comment or share with us..*VBS* Hugs all around! Really love the yellow and blue combination. Truly a labor of love.
Both quilts are beauties, but the second one really has energy.
I'm glad it was just a dry gulch! I'd hate to see this train derailed and taken out of service. It's brought us so many wonderful quilt pictures in the past!
I know I am now fresh out of orphan blocks so it'll be a long time before I can make another orphan quilt. I wonder if that's true about some of the others? I'll certainly keep my eyes open for others as I'm "surfing the net".
Oh, I love these two quilts! Different flavors and both delicious! I'm so relieved this blog isn't getting derailed. I'm still planning to make more orphan tops... I have tons of orphans to unite into a quilt. But I've been busy with other stuff and freaking out about things I need to get done. Maybe I should take a deep breath, stop freaking, and work on another orphan top. Anything to keep this train moving.
So glad we aren't derailed. I love both of these. Thanks for sharing.
