From The Magpie's Nest....

a really neat thrift store orphan blocks find. Sue loves a bargain as much as she loves quilts. That makes for a great combination! She recently came across this small quilt and paid all of $4 for it!Here's part of what she had to say about it "Here's an orphan I found in the thrift shop the other day. It's about 34" x 37" and looks to be bound with commercially made binding tape. I'm guessing the maker just sewed up a bunch of four-patch blocks and set them together however it felt right. She has two patches of the same red gingham butted up against each other in one spot but the rest is amazingly well balanced."
You can read ALL about at Sue's blog, From the Magpie's Nest. Thanks for sharing with us, Sue!

Have you seen this post by Joyce? She uses orphan blocks to make chickens!

$4!!! Doesn't it sort of make you cringe when you think of where our quilts might end up in 40 years? Someone selling them for less than dirt and/or using them for... what? Moving electronic keyboards?

Cute. I recognize some of those fabrics in older quilts I have. How come I never find neat things like that when I visit the thrift stores?

Finn, I've been reading your blog for over a year and always enjoy the posts about orphan blocks. Why did it take me so long to realize you had another blog devoted entirely to these remarkable quilts? I've spent all evening reading through the archives. Thank you so much for encouraging and documenting the making of this special genre of quilts!

What a great find! I looked & looked but didn't spot the 2 red ginghams that are together, so they must not look too awful bad LOL!

I'm glad somebody who appreciated the quilt found it & not somebody looking for something to lay on on the ground underneath his truck while he fixes it! (I found a wonderful hand-appliqued quilt being used for that very thing a few years back! The guy had paid $2. for it & since I liked it so much he just gave it to me! After a good washing it was fine. DD came home for the weekend, fell in love with it & took it back to the dorm with her. That was over ten years ago & she still wraps up in it on chilly nights - but now instead of being in the dorm studying with it she has 3 of her own DDs snuggling under it with her!)

Gee, I didn't mean to write a BOOK!

Just noticed it that in my post the dollar sign looks like a five & that gives the impression that he paid a lot more for the quilt than he did... he paid TWO DOLLARS! Hopefully the quilter never knew that her baby spent those shameful afternoons under the truck! I think she'd be pleased to know the story has a happy ending though. :-)
